How to keep your school leadership goals alive as the year gets busy.

by Jim Best

Blue path winds past rocks, a brick wall and a tree toward a distant blue dot on a white, sketch-like landscape.

This summer, The Leader Network worked with school leaders, leadership teams, and boards of trustees across the country — and around the world — as they prepared for the year ahead.

Together, we set school leadership goals, helped make hard choices, and translated aspirations into real work plans. The conversations were energizing. And important.

There's something powerful about a group deciding what matters most and starting the year with a shared sense of direction.

And then conditions change.

An unexpected challenge demands attention. A promising initiative takes longer than planned. Something that looked clear in August feels a lot more complicated in November.

That doesn't mean you're off track. It means you're making progress in the real world.

The goal isn't to travel in a straight line. It's to keep your bearings and continue heading in the right direction.

Check your course, often.

Keep the goals few enough to remember and meaningful enough to matter. Return to them all year — a simple check-in with your team or board works:

  • What's moving?

  • What's in the way?

  • What are we learning?

Adjust when the answers call for it, without losing the larger direction.

Reframe the setback.

A setback can be productive. It can reveal what needs attention, a different approach, or simply more time. A hard moment doesn't erase the progress already made — it may be part of making it.

We stay with you.

Our work doesn't end when the goals are written or the retreat ends. We stay alongside school leaders, teams, and boards as the year unfolds and the challenges arrive — when the wind is at your back, when it pushes you off course, and when you need a trusted partner to help you find your bearings again. Keep the destination clear. Keep checking your course. Keep moving.

If The Leader Network can help you set your course — or stay it — as the year unfolds, please reach out.
